Coronavirus – what is it?

So this post is all based on my own learning’s through the news and internet – nothing here has come from official sources.

Coronavirus first came to light at the end of 2019 and has quickly become a worldwide problem closing whole countries down.
It began in China before spreading to Italy and then across the globe.
Symptoms can be very flu like – including headache, cough, sore throat, temperature.
Due to it being a new virus and their being no vaccine for it countries introduced lockdown measures to stop the virus from spreading.
To begin with Britain introduced measures to keep the most vunerable groups safe by making them stay at home before bringing in widespread lockdown measures in from March 2020.
The lockdown includes:

  • shops limiting the amount of people allowed in at any one time
  • self distancing measures introduced – must stay 2m away from people outside of your immediate household
  • no meeting of friends or family unless you live together

The below was not written by myself but is a list of things that have happened due to the lockdown:

Fuel prices dropped a record amount.
Self-distancing measures on a rise.
Tape on the floors at supermarkets to help distance shoppers 2m (6ft) from each other. One-way systems & supervision within supermarkets to safeguard shoppers.
Non-essential stores and businesses mandated closed.
Parks, cinemas, theatres closed. Filming for movies & tv halted.
Entire sports seasons cancelled.
Concerts, tours, festivals, entertainment events – cancelled.
Weddings, family celebrations, holiday gatherings – cancelled.
Funerals limited to children/parents/spouses of deceased.
Mother’s giving birth alone.
No masses, churches are closed.
Schools are all closed.
No gatherings permitted.
Don’t socialise with anyone outside of your home.
We are to distance from each other.
Shortage of masks, gowns, gloves for our front-line workers.
Shortage of respirators for the critically ill.
Panic buying sets in and we have no toilet paper, no hand sanitiser, disposable gloves or paracetamol.
Shelves are bare.
Manufacturers, distilleries and other businesses switch their lines to help make visors, masks, hand sanitiser and PPE.
Government closes the border to all non essential travel and makes it mandatory to self isolate for 14 days when returning.
Police have the power to stop & fine people for non essential travel including driving to walk their dogs.
Fines for those price-gauging others.
Stadiums, airports and recreation facilities open up for the overflow of Covid-19 patients or as temporary mortuaries.
Press conferences daily from the Prime Minister.
Barely anyone in the streets or on the roads.
People wearing masks and gloves outside.
Essential service workers are scared to go to work.
Medical workers are afraid to go home to their families.
Retired NHS staff are urged to return to work.
Many people placed on furlough and unable to work with the government paying 80% of their wage.

There currently is no end date to the lockdown with talk on the news being that it will stay in place until the end of the year at least with the social distancing measures staying in place until early next year.
